Plantation honors veterans
with Navy Appreciation Day
By Nicole Novena
Since 2003, the residents and management of The Plantation in Ponte Vedra Beach have graciously funded and
hosted a “Naval Appreciation Day.” Inspired by the events of 9/11/2001, the
theme of the event is to express thanks,
and to never forget, in particular, the
role of our local Navy personnel.
The 13th Appreciation Day was especially significant as its founder, Jim Gaff,
a member of the Greatest Generation,
decorated US Navy WWII veteran and
Plantation resident, passed away January 15, 2015.
The Plantation’s golf course is currently undergoing a renovation and
therefore, the committee faced the obstacle of having to secure another site
for the event. Not wanting to cancel
the successful event, it was decided to
bring it to the Navy. Arrangements were
made to use the Navy’s Mayport Windy
Harbor Golf Club. The Plantation transported 28 resident golfers, 40 volunteers
(including chefs), food, beverages, and
prizes to Mayport for the day.
The activity-packed day began with
breakfast, followed by a day of golf.
Prizes were awarded throughout the
day, and the event ended with a steak
luncheon for all participants. Activities throughout the day were catered
by Plantation residents and employees
who, if not scheduled for the day, volunteered their time and talent.
Ninety-one Navy personnel participated in the day’s event, including representatives from NAS/Jax, Kings Bay,
Mayport, the Marines, Coast Guard, Canines for Warriors, and Wounded Warriors.
The Plantation is a premier, equity
residential neighborhood in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida with luxury amenities including a championship golf
course, private beach club, tennis facility, fitness center and a clubhouse with
dining and social activities for all ages.
In addition, The Plantation is undergoing a $7+ million dollar facilities improvement plan which includes a new
amenities park coming in early 2016,
a complete revitalization of the golf
course and an extensive renovation to
the beach club facility. For more information regarding The Plantation visit
