Exercise is essential to heart health. It
not only burns off calories and prevents
obesity, but it lowers blood pressure, reduces LDL “bad” cholesterol and boosts
HDL “good” cholesterol.
The AHA recommends kids participate in double the amount of exercise
than that of adults – about 60 minutes
of moderate-intensity physical activities
daily. Feel free to break up the time into
two 30 minute or four 15 minute exercise sessions.
Some ideas include a game of tag,
walking the dog or playing school or
club sports, the important thing is that
your kids are moving.
Unless your child has a congenital
heart condition, you don’t have to be
overly concerned about heart disease
during childhood. This time of year is
a good time to assess if your kids are
developing behavior patterns that may
negatively affect their later heart health
through continued intake of unhealthy
foods and an inactive lifestyle. Health
habits start young – make sure you are
promoting good ones.
