WELCOME// EDITORIAL EDITORIAL Our thanks to all those who have supplied copy for this year’s magazine. We hope you enjoy reading it and see something of the variety, energy, attainment and extraordinary commitment to Pocklington School from staff, pupils and friends alike. Alan Heaven I have enjoyed doing school magazine for the past year, hope the new editors enjoy the challenge, and would like to thank Mr Heaven for being patient with Charlie and myself, throughout the process. I would lastly like to thank the designer for making a very good magazine. Hope all goes well next year. Jonty Goddard It has been a very pleasurable experience editing the school magazine this past year and it was very satisfying seeing the finished copy come together against all odds. Editing the school magazine has really given me an opportunity to express myself. I would like to thank Jonty for being a great co-editor and also Mr Heaven for doing everything. I wish all the best for the new up and coming editing team. Charlie Laudage “I am extremely proud of the diverse range of activities which take place at our School, and this magazine captures the spirit and energy of our pupils as well as the dedication of our staff”. 2 THE POCKLINGTONIAN HEAD GIRL I joined Pocklington School in 2009 as a very excited year 5 student and what a fantastic 9 years it’s been! The last year as Head Girl has been an amazing way to end my time at Pock. It’s definitely been challenging at times, but Ed and I have had the best group of prefects who were always willing to give up their own time to help – so a big ‘thanks’ to the whole team! It’s fair to say I’m pretty passionate about Pock and I can’t thank the school staff enough for their care and support throughout my time at the school. Pocklington has so much to offer any individual, so my advice to any new or younger students is try out as much as you can! For me, hockey has been the best thing to take part in at Pock. It’s where my love for the sport has started and playing for the first team for the past three years has been amazing. But it’s not just sports I’ve enjoyed. I have received tremendous support from all my teachers and have managed to achieve the grades I needed for University. I’d like to wish Dr Dyson the very best in his retirement. His endless support and love for chemistry has helped me this year so thank you for everything, and to Mr and Mrs Ronan also. Finally congratulations to the new Heads – Emma and Henry. You’ll both smash it! Millie Barnes HEAD BOY It’s very strange to know that I won’t be coming back to Pocklington School in September. With my dad teaching here since 2001, I feel I’ve been at the school for pretty much my whole life and the thought of moving on is quite surreal to me. Being asked to be Head Boy of a school which has been such a huge part of my life was a privilege and an honour and something I will always be immensely proud of. The position provided me with the opportunity to really challenge myself – quite worryingly for me I suddenly found that I had quite a lot of responsibility! Luckily, we had a great team of prefects supervised by Mr Bond, whose hard work behind the scenes was so important to ensuring the year ran smoothly. Through the years, Pocklington has offered me so much and I am very grateful for this. Sport has been a massive part of my time here, and I’m very proud to say I’ve represented the school in nearly every sport possible, as well as captaining the 1st team for tennis. I was lucky enough to go amazing trips on at school including Paris, Italy, Greece, Munich, Belgium and America. I would encourage you to go on as many school trips as possible, as I’ve made so many great memories. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone at the school for a wonderful final year. There has never been a dull moment! I wish Henry, Emma and the prefect team the best of luck for next year. Ed Dare
