MEDICINAL USES
OF THE
This is a very poisonous
OLLANDER
Otto Kokk
The leaves
and the
flowers are
cardiotonic,
diaphoretic,
diuretic,
emetic,
expectorant
and
sternutatory.
A decoction
of the leaves
has been
applied
externally in
the treatment
of scabies,
and to reduce
swellings.
Ehard Kuusk
and Otto Kokk
plant, containing a
powerful cardiac toxin,
and should only be used
with extreme caution.
The root is powerfully
resolvent. Because of its
poisonous nature it is
only used externally. It is
beaten into a paste with
water and applied to
chancres and ulcers on
the plants.
An oil prepared
from the root
bark is used in
the treatment of
leprosy and
skin diseases of
a scaly nature.
The whole
plant is said to
have anticancer
properties.
Due to its toxicity,
this plant is not
used for cooking.
Thanks to its spectacular
flowering, this plant is used in
gardens and party walls of the
road. Currently there are many
garden varieties with diferent
number of petals and colours.
But we can add some
other uses of this plant:
Oleander has been used
over time for different profits:
Their stems have been used in
basketwork.
The ashes resuted after burning
its wood have been used to
make gunpowder.
Its stems have been used
to prevent plants such as
chickpeas, beans and
other legumes from
diseases.
And also the dust
from their leaves and
stems has been used
to make rat poison.
