1956 & 1960 Women ’ s AA Gold Medalist Larisa Latynina set the Olympic record for most medals earned ( 18 medals ) by any athlete , male or female . The record stood for 48 years , until 2012 , when Micheal Phelps broke it .

» Larisa still owns the Olympic record for most medals ( 14 ) in individual events ( not including team ).

Vera Caslavska
1964 & 1968 Women ’ s AA Gold Medalist Vera Caslavaska is the only Olympic gymnast , male or female , to win a gold medal on every event , plus the AA and team !
