FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN a testimony from Montana Birt In April of 1974, I was an 8-year-old little boy in the second grade living what I thought to be a normal life. When all at once the world I knew forever changed without any notice. Hello, my name is Montana Birt. M y family consists of my mother, father, two brothers, and two sisters with my birth being the middle child. We lived in a small, southern community in Georgia where everyone knew all their neighbors and people in the town. As a youngster, I considered my family common, but in hindsight today, I can tell you there was nothing common about my family. My mother was a stay-at-home mom and my dad was gone almost all the time. Whenever my father did come home, he came bearing many toys and gifts for the family. To a child, I thought life was good because of the many gifts we were showered with when my dad was around. 46
