Sara propped herself on her elbow to look at me. “About your parents getting a divorce. My mom told me. Weeks ago.”

“Your mom?”

“Well, yeah. Did you think your mom hadn’t said anything either?”

I sat up. “So everyone’s talking about it?”

“Don’t exaggerate, Rachel. Plenty of people’s parents get divorced. It’s not exactly headline news. Besides, did you think it could be a secret forever? That’s not healthy, you know. It’s much better if you talk about it.” Sara had been watching a lot of The Phil Donahue Show, and planned to be a therapist when she grew up. I could tell she liked to use me for practice.

“Who says I’m not talking about it? Just because I haven’t talked about it with you doesn’t mean I haven’t talked about it at all.”

“C’mon, Rach. If you’re not talking about it with me, you’re not talking about it. Period.”

“That’s not true.”

“Yes it is. Have you met his girlfriend yet?”

“Jesus, Sara!”

“So you haven’t then. Maybe you should practice how you’re going to act when you see her. She’ll be nervous. It’ll be a good chance for you to get the upper hand.” I hadn’t thought of this before. “Seriously. Even if she’s a bitch she’ll want you to like her.”
