Artist's Statement

I’ve had the Girl With The Umbrella as a character for a long time; nearly a decade. She started popping up in different pieces and I always saw her as the better parts of what I hope to be: adventurous, courageous, curious, and selfless. I began to wonder what she’d encounter on her journeys, and how she’d react to the people and places she saw.

A Girl Walks Into A Bear

This one is my favorite. To me, it symbolizes a willingness to trust—not only in the kindness of others but in your own instincts and fortitude. She doesn’t know what’s going to happen before they get out of the woods, but she’s ready to face whatever comes.

The Ascent

I wanted to challenge myself a little, here. I’m not great at monochromatic palettes, and I studied dozens of underwater photographs to get a sense of how light works in the ocean. In the end, I’m really happy with the textures I was able to achieve, as well as the light source.
