In this video, Vice-Chancellor Pacheco
reminds the students that, “People who have a
passion for science and technology render a
great service to society. They continuously seek
answers to big and small problems of
humankind.”
The second AVP, titled Culture and the Arts in
UP Diliman, premiered at the 2013 UP
Diliman Freshman Orientation. The 11-minute
video carries the tagline “Live the Arts: Create
and Collaborate,” and is divided into three
sections. The first section features the legacy of
UP in the arts and humanities, the second part
presents arts and humanities education in UP
Diliman, while the third section serves as a call
to action on several levels—an implicit call for
support, a call to preserve the legacy of honor
and excellence, and a call to serve. The AVP
brings to life the creative verve in the campus
through its various constituents—National
Artists, University officials, alumni who have
made their mark in culture and arts
professions, and current students. The words of
National Artist for Visual Arts Abdulmari Asia
Imao best sum up why UP Diliman is a hub
for culture and the arts: “It is hard to imagine
a
place where so much creativity and
so much collaboration across disciplines ha
been so concentrated and have affected society
at large. Everything converges and
reverberates from here.”
The third production is an upbeat, Music
Television (MTV)-style AVP called
Convergence: Technology and the Arts for a
Smarter Philippines, which was launched
during the 2013 NSTW exhibition.

As the third installment in the OVCRD’s AVP
series, the Convergence AVP highlights how
UP Diliman is simultaneously harnessing
science and art to fulfill its mandates of honor,
excellence, and service to the nation. It also
aims to project UP Diliman as a dynamic
center of research and creative work initiatives,
thereby reinforcing its reputation as the
country’s national university. In terms of
treatment and execution, the AVP has a more
youthful and playful vibe, as it is fully reliant
for its structure and flow on an upbeat techno
