DINING

TELL US ABOUT THE INSPIRATION

FOR THIS ROOM.

Years ago, I ran across a black bathroom in one of my favorite shelter magazines that I fell in love with. It was bold and dramatic, yet crisp and clean. I fell in love with the aesthetic and it never left my mind. In general, I tend to prefer more tailored interior spaces. When it came time to finally address my dining room, I knew I wanted the same feel. However, I didn't start out with a literal goal in mind, as the biggest addition to the space was a total surprise find. I'm a sucker for a beautifully dramatic, tailored dining room. I can't think of a better ambience in which to host a fabulous dinner party with my closest friends!

WHAT DID YOU PURCHASE FIRST, THE WALLPAPER OR THE FURNITURE AND ACCESSORIES?

The wallpaper, which I stumbled upon in the back of a stock room years ago. It was being discontinued, so I ponied up and bought the entire remaining stock on hand. Everytime I walk by this space I am reminded that it was one of the best impulse design purchases I've ever made (and trust me, I've made a lot).

WHAT ARE YOU FAVORITE PIECES IN THE ROOM AND WHY?

First, my Louis dining chairs. They were a secondhand find on Craiglist that I refinished by

hand and then had my upholsterer recover the cushions and add the nailhead trim. Second best impulse design purchase. Second, my campaign style dresser that functions as a buffet. Why? Look at it -- it has it's original, beautiful brass hardware and it's vintage. Oh, and did I mention it was free? That's my favorite price point in the whole world! Third, the antique brass chandelier. It's special to me, mainly because I found it at a random vintage shop up the street from the house I grew up in, back in California. I love that I was able to bring a little bit of Fresno style back home to anchor this space.

HOW COULD OUR READERS CREATE THIS LOOK?

Think bold color schemes, high contrast accents, and eclectic accessories. Don't be afraid to mix your metals! Slate gray or anything in the navy family would be a great starting point to create a fresh take on this look.

LIVING SINGLE OR GIRLFRIENDS?

Girlfriends. Joan's hair was sick, Toni had the best wardrobe, and Maya was the perfect reminder of the "boughetto" girlfriend we all know and love.
