Winter 2016
Convention Site 2016: The DoubleTree
• The Ohio Ballroom. This is where some Certamen
rounds, Certamen Finals, OJCL’s got talent, and the
General Assemblies will be held.
The front of the Doubletree
On January 9th, the OJCL Executive Board got a
tour of the Doubletree in Worthington, the site of the
2016 Ohio Junior Classical League Convention. First
things first, this hotel will be a completely different
experience from the Ramada. Say goodbye to mold,
broken appliances, and a strange, inexplicable mustiness,
and say hello to nice carpets, clean rooms, and what’s sure
to be an amazing
weekend!
The first thing
we noticed about the
Doubletree is that it
is quite a bit smaller
than the Ramada and
the Columbus
Convention Center
were. This may seem
like a downside at
first, but it actually
means that the hotel
will be much easier
to navigate, and all
of the events will be
closer together. The
ballroom (where the
General Assemblies
A bathroom in one of the rooms
will be held) is
actually the same size as it was at the Ramada. The next
noticeable difference is that the Doubletree is a nice,
clean space. No matter how nostalgic about the Ramada
we are, let’s be honest. It was a dump. A dump filled with
weird smells and slightly dirty rooms. The Doubletree
comes with great, clean rooms that do contain minifridges.
The most important places for all you JCLers to
know about are:
The Upper Terrace
• The Upper Terrace. The Upper Terrace isn’t exactly a
room, as it’s more of an elevated area right behind the
lobby and front entrance. This is where all election
related events will be held.
• The various board rooms. These rooms are spread out
among hallways that come off of the main lobby. These
rooms are where Certamen matches will be held, where
some of the Colloquia will be held, and it’s where you
all will compete in Creative Arts Contests.
• The forbidden west wing. This is where the graphic arts
projects will be held.
• The front desk. This is where the cookies are kept!
Overall, the new space will be a great change for
Convention, and I hope to see you all there, February
19-21, 2016!
