SKILLS FOR LIFE Programs For Individual Development At The NeXus This summer the Northern NeXus Of Adventure offers multiple programs that help a Scout develop skills for life. These programs are great opportunities to develop leadership skills and Scout advancement opportunities. Brownsea Brownsea is a unique and exciting, hands on approach designed to teach youth leadership skills through the actual practice and use of Scout skills. Skills most closely concentrated on are camping, hiking, nature study, pioneering, and cooking. This course closely parallels the first Scout camp conducted by Lord Baden Powell in 1907. This program places special emphasis on Scout skills, teaching, and practice: the purposes of Scouting: and the role of the patrol method within the troop program. It is not done by classroom lecture, but rather by programs of skill, leadership exercise, and patrol competition. Scouts who complete the program will have a better awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses for their personal leadership styles. Brownsea will be held July 3-9, 2016 at TL Storer. NYLT National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide all 13- to 20-year-old youth members of the Boy Scouts of America, both male and female, with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. This is THE training for the next generation of senior youth leaders in Troops, Teams and Crews. Two courses are offered in 2016 at TL Storer; July 10-16 and July 31 to August 6. Eagle Week These programs are a unique blend of traditional Summer Camp, Eagle merit badge classes, and group activities. The purpose is to help Scouts advance toward achieving the Eagle Scout rank by providing a program focused primarily on required Eagle merit badges. Our daily schedule provides each Scout with the opportunity to earn as many as 4 required merit badges. Those Scouts who sign up for less than 4 required merit badges and have open merit badge periods in the morning will be able to sign up for regular camp badges, at a later date. There are many opportunities for the Scouts in the Eagle Week program to participate in regular camp activities in the afternoon like swimming, nature hikes, cooking demonstrations, shooting and much more. All Eagle Week participants are encouraged to take part in camp wide activities as well as Eagle Week specific evening activities. Counselor in Training Programs Learn to be a camp counselor. If you are 14 years old and are interested in learning about what it is like to be on staff you can be a Counselor in Training at all our NeXus Camps. As a CIT you have plenty of time to participate in camp programs, earn merit badges, and make new friends. You can choose as many weeks and how many camps as you like. It’s a great opportunity to spend a week at Storer and another at Wah-Tut-Ca. A minimum of three weeks is recommended to get the best experience. Sign up for the CIT programs is done on the provisional links for each Scout Camp.
