wrong but seek compassion in the gray , are ethical decision makers , serve everyone as equals , be willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice in protecting the community if called upon to do so , and maintain a realistic level of self confidence that is earned , developed , and strengthened over time that all of the characteristics and traits previously listed will become ingrained in each officer over time . They will willingly do things that will become resume entries , and their track records will be amazing . And yes , you will leave behind a legacy that is legendary .

1 . In my 8th Grade yearbook ( Class of 1971 ) I listed that I wanted to be a teacher even though I knew long before then that I wanted to be a police officer . I doubted myself and my potential and would add that teacher was a second choice .
2 . My Dad passed away in July of 2014 and my wife Kath and I moved to Florida in November of 2014 .
3 . At the time I had graduated from college and was working for the Highway Department where many days I worked on the trash truck . Dream # 1 had been realized .
4 . In addition , I had the honor of being an Instructor in the Police Academy
5 . This was an auxiliary position that was volunteer , unarmed , and we were used at special events like the annual carnival at the Catholic Church
6 . This becomes even more significant in the discussion of having a Police Chief vs . a Director of Public Safety at the helm of a police department .

The reason for passing over a more senior officer may not be a factor in causing tension between these officers especially if the promotion is justified via the fair and open promotional process .. Just the fact that the officer ( s ) was by-passed may lead to a disgruntled and non-cooperative officer who can impact the department like a spreading cancer .
9 . Yes , we all make mistakes and will continue to make mistakes . The question , however , is are they the same mistakes that have not been learned from ; and , do our expectations of others match how we are willing to be ?

11 . We should also never forget the many civilian heroes whose sacrifices that horrible day helped save many others , some strangers .
