A NEW YEAR AND NEW CHALLENGES
The start of a new year always brings with it the hope and promise of better times, and of course a look
back on the year just passed. Some people think back on all of the things which they did not get to
accomplish of the previous 12 months, while others look forward to all that they plan to do in the year
ahead.
I heard it said that on New Year’s Eve an optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in, and a
pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. If that is the case, I am a bit of both, since I see
both the positive and the negative in the year gone by, and am hopeful for the year to come, which
maintaining a healthy bit of skepticism about the challenges ahead.
But, having said that, I am certain that, collectively, we will work together to fight the good fight – for
our departments, our communities, and for our profession. Good times or bad, as police professionals
and leaders we continue to do our jobs, just as we always have. And so, too, does the NJ State
Association of Chiefs of Police. Our Association continues to provide programs and services for Chiefs
and their departments, and I urge all of our members to continue to take advantage of all that your
association has to offer.
On behalf of our Board of Officers, our Executive Director and association staff, please accept my
personal best wishes for a healthy, productive, safe, and happy New Year. 2018 marks our Association’s
106th year, and we will do all in our power to build on the tradition of excellence that the NJSACOP has
developed over the more than a century.
