Team member Eleanor Gunby shares some helpful tips on bird identification.

One of the best ways to start out birding is to watch some common species that you might see in your backyard. Get to know them inside out – their size and shape, plumage, and behaviour. Some birds are quite simple to tell apart, while others can be surprisingly tricky. Blackbirds and Song Thrushes are two species that can often trip people up.

Male Blackbirds, with their black bodies and orange bills and eyerings, are quite distinctive. But juvenile and female Blackbirds, which are mainly brown, can be really hard to differentiate from Thrushes.
