What are you up to Skye?

Привет Дневник. That means hello diary in Russian, the breeding lands of our many of our migrant waders.

I went for a run this morning down to the beach. It's been your typical September weather I suppose, a little windy at times but sunny.

I got up, went to the beach and realised it was low tide.

"Oh, I wanted to go for a swim," I said, feeling disappointed.

Out of nowhere came a weird, peeping sound. I snuck into the dunes and peered over to see who it was.

"Welcome home!!" said a cheerful ladys' voice, "how was Siberia?"

"It was brilliant thanks love, " uttered a small brown bird with a short, fat beak.

I waltzed out to say hello, when I saw that the cheerful lady was Piper, my Oystercatcher friend.

"Hi Skye, how are you?" she said, with a big smile on her face.

I went to reply, but she interrupted me. "Oh where are my manners. This is Franklin, he's a Red Knot, and he's just come all the way from Russia!".

"Pleased to meet you, Skye." he said, "but I have got to go out to get a snack sorry. I am still very tired from all that flying!".

Before I could even say goodbye he was in the sky flying off to the edge of the mud.

"I might go with him, but you'll have to stay here love, you can't go out in the mud," said Piper.

I sighed, said goodbye, and flew of to tell my friends all about it. They were so jealous, and we're going to go see him tomorrow morning, when the tide is in. Maybe I might even get to have a swim!!!

What are you up to Skye

Kia Ora Raataka. That means hello diary in Maori, the native language of New Zealand.

Today I was out playing hide and go seek. The first friend I found was Kahu the Swamp Harrier. He was sitting on a fence post and trying to blend in, but had to itch his belly, and gave it away.

I was sneaking up really carefully behind him, but then I heard a really strange noise.

"HONK, whistle, HONK, whistle, HONK, whistle"

I went over to see what was up, and you wouldn't beleive it! This beautiful big black bird. It looked like a duck, but nothing like the ones at the pond. Behind it was another brown duck. But this one had white on her head.

"Hello," I said.

"Hello," said the black duck, in a very deep voice. "I'm Parry, this is Shelly. She's the love of my life, aren't you dear". Shelly nodded.

"But you two aren't the same kind of bird are you? You look so different," I remarked.

"Oh yes we are. We are Putangitangi or Paradise Shelduck and we are found only in New Zealand. We're unique".

"Like the tui?"

"Yep. Like the tui."

"Cool!" I said, really excited. I'd only met one other kind of unique bird before, the Tui. I went really quickly to tell my friends.

When I told Quillia the Quail said that they come to the farm sometimes, but they like the neighbours farm more, because they have a stream.

I am really excited to have met the Putangitangi, and I really want to see them again. Maybe they will be there in the morning? Maybe. 7/07/2015 :) Best Day Ever!
