There are probably fewer than 10,000 Kaka alive today. Most have perished due to the forest being cut down, and now the remaining few live in an endless battle with introduced mammals, mainly the stoat.

Kaka live their whole life high up in tree tops, eating seeds, fruits, nectar, flowers, leaves and bugs. In winter, Kaka leave their forest homes and fly into cities, where there is more food.

The best place to see Kaka in New Zealand is Zealandia, where a re-introduction has been highly successful.
