(Moral) Background Growing up as child on W 37 th St. in the Sea Gate neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, surrounded on three sides by water and a stone’s throw from the Coney Island Lighthouse, Oscar’s heart was always set on working at sea. So, when he was drafted at age 18 it was natural that he ended up passing through the Great Lakes Naval Training Center to become a sailor in the U.S. Navy. More surprising was his aptitude for working with all things electronic, including RBB and RBC radio receivers. Once his training as Radioman 2 nd Class is complete, Oscar Fox, or Foxy as he is known by his friends in acknowledgement for his “way with the ladies”, is posted to serve on the USS Mason (DE-529) in September 1944 ready to sail from New York as convoy escort to Europe. After a distinguished service career aboard the Mason, Oscar returns home to live with his parents and younger sister. He finds employment with the United States Lines shipping company and by the spring of 1946 is a radio operator aboard the SS Marine Marlin; originally built as a troop transport but refitted to carry commercial passengers and cargo between New York and Southampton.
