News & Notes President’s Message By Nicholas Perry MVHA President Winter Greetings! As the MVHA’s newly elected president, I’d like to start my first official message with some important thank you’s. This newsletter is published four times a year by the MOUNTAIN VIEW HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 252, Mountain View, CA 94042 www.mountainviewhistorical.org MVHA Board of Directors President: Nicholas Perry Vice-President: Robert Cox Secretary: Jamil Shaikh Treasurer: Emily Ramos Past President: Candace Bowers Historical Data: Melissa Wright Membership: Lisa Roquero Garcia Newsletter: John Cortez Ways & Means: Regina Sakols Director-at-Large: Marina Marinovich Director-at-Large: Gil Lane Newsletter Copy Editor: Cynthia Hanson Newsletter Graphic Designer: Nick Perry MVHA Board of Directors Email: [email protected] Voicemail: (650) 903-6890 First, I’d like to thank our out-going Board members: Nick Galiotto (past president), Eugene Sharp (historical data chair), and Alison Hicks (director-at-large). Nick and Eugene have both served on the Board for many years and have contributed in countless ways to the MVHA. I wish them well in their “retirement” from our Board and thank them for their years of service. And while Alison joined the Board only last year, during her short tenure we’ve truly benefited from her positive energy and ideas. She’s stepping down to devote more time to her role as a newly elected member of the City Council. So, a big thank you and hearty congratulations to Alison! With these three goodbyes come three hellos. I’m very pleased to welcome to the Board Robert Cox as our new vice president, Gil Lane as our new director-at-large, and Melissa Wright as our new historical data committee chair. You can learn more about each of them on page six of this newsletter. And last, but not least, I’d like to thank my predecessor in this position, Candace Bowers. During a time of difficult transitions for the Board, I’m grateful that Candace was willing to step into the role of president, and I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role as past president. As I look ahead to 2019, I’m excited for the future of MVHA. This year our organization will celebrate its 65th anniversary. Our founding members created the MVHA to help ensure the City’s history wasn’t lost during a time of rapid growth in the 1950s. As Mountain View goes through another wave of rapid growth, the MVHA’s mission to preserve and share the City’s history remains just as relevant today as it was in 1954. But at the same time, I also believe the MVHA should embrace the dynamic energy that exists in Mountain View today. Our organization is uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge between Mountain View’s past, present, and future. The MVHA’s events and activities can help connect people with local history in meaningful ways, create opportunities to celebrate the many things that make Mountain View special today, and help us learn from the past to plan a better future. I’m excited to be working with the Board and our membership to achieve these goals. And if you’re reading this and would like to get more involved, don’t hesitate to drop me a line at [email protected]. Happy New Year! -Nick 2
