THE VINE WINES OF Substance debuts... W hen Charles Smith sold off a number of brands to Constellation last year in a $120-million deal, it was a little bit of a surprise. Well, it turns out he knew exactly what he was doing. It allowed him to expand the part of the portfolio he holds dear; K Vintners, SIXTO, Casa Smith and Substance. It also made way to create a new portfolio company which he aptly named Wines of Substance. The trailblazing veteran Washington winemaker is pretty confident in his new re-vamped portfolio. And he is also bullish that it will continue its double digit growth in the coming years. Last year, the wines that make up the new Wines 10 th ANNIVERSARY of Substance portfolio totaled 450,000 cases, making Wines of Substance the fourth-largest wine producer in Washington, and the state’s largest winemaker-owned winery. The K Vintners brand includes a range of wines made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and Viognier. SIXTO is an old-vine, high-elevation Chardonnay project, while Casa Smith specializes in Washington-grown Italian varietals. Substance includes a flagship Cabernet Sauvignon as well as single-vineyard “Super Substance” Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cab bottlings. 3
