GET EDUCATED WWW.THEMARKWINESCHOOL.COM 10 th ANNIVERSARY In recent memory, The Mark Wine Camp headed to Washington State this summer to kick some dirt with renegade winemaker Charles Smith in both his Jet City winery and his home at the original K Vintners tasting room, DeLille “Wineflecting”, Carneros, 2007 winemaker Chris Upchurch at his home and winery in the Red Mountain region, Long Shadows project winemaker Gilles Nicault in Walla Walla and Goose Ridge Winemaker Andrew Wilson on the slopes of their vineyards in Red Mountain. I chatted with Anna Krone, Director of Beverage for Maggiano’s about her life in wine and the always evolving wine program and the famous American Italian Bistro. We also got up close and personal with Katherince Wojcik, Director of Beverage Programs for Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants in this issue’s Uncorked for a look at her life behind the scenes. We also got into the tank with Roots Run Deep Founder and President Mark Albrecht, where we learned all about his rise in the industry. Coming up for The Mark Wine Group, lots of travel as usual. Mark, Jeff and Erin continue to rack up those miles flying everywhere from Tampa to Tennessee, Charlotte to Chicago and New York to Nevada. This fall The Mark Wine Camp makes its maiden voyage to Spain. The group will visit Europvin’s wineries such as CVNE, Abadia Retuerta, Vega Sicilia, Viña Real, Viña Herminia in places like Bilbao, Rioja, Haro, Ribera del Duero and Jerez, Spain’s famous Sherry region and home to Lustau. And wait for it....the 5th annual MWG Formula 1 Experience Weekend is coming up October 20th. And man oh man, has this camp grown. From just a few folks the first year to a very serious group of ten fans this year. But it’s all fun; no frowns or formal wear allowed. This year they are staking out ground at a South Congress property that includes five airstreams and large luxury home, just minutes from Austin’s famous, vintage drag. And again, they’ll don their race gear for their own “go-kart” Grand Prix. And if the weather permits, a trip on The Mark Wine Group’s boat, Amphora. Sunscreen, hats and hollow legs recommended. 1
