WASHINGTON AUGUST 2017 T he Mark Wine Camp headed west to the Evergreen state of Washington, where lumber, apples, pears and cherries may reign supreme, but not on this this trip. This trip was all about wine. After checking into Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco, the “campers” were picked up in a stretch Hummer limousine and driven to meet legendary winemaker Charles Smith at his urban Jet City winery, adjacent to the old Boeing airfield in the Georgetown section of Seattle. After being treated to some very special wine in 8 the private upstairs room, we headed down to barrel taste everything from the single vineyard Chardonnay’s that go into Sixto, several different vineyards of Viognier and even barrel samples of 2014 futures like the K Vintners Cattle King Syrah and King Coal Cabernet/ Syrah. Yeah, pretty amazing. The boys of summer at Charles Smith’s private residence in Walla Walla, and home to the original K Vintners Tasting Room The next morning we all headed back to Sea-Tac (Seattle airport) for a quick flight down to the Tri-Cities region.
