Snocross
Snocross is a mix of motorcross and
snowmobiling. Riders race specialized,
high performance snowmobiles around a
track, consisting of tight turns, obstacles,
and steep jumps. It’s a heart pumping sport
with a lot of action, noise, and speed.
The Maine Highlands region hosts two annual
snocross events in the beginning of the year.

Ride to Revisit a
Cold War Crash Site
On the southern slope of Elephant Mountain, just 15 minutes
from downtown Greenville, lies the wreckage of a United States
Air Force Boeing B-52C Stratofortress. The debris covers several
acres of the forest and visitors are free to wander through this
Cold War memorial site.
The crash happened on a January afternoon in 1963. The plane
took off from Westover AFB in Massachusetts on what should
have been a routine training mission. Gusts of wind from Maine’s
western mountains created turbulence that, ultimately, tore off
part of the B-52's tail.
Each year the Moosehead Riders
Snowmobile Club hosts a ride to the
memorial site to pay tribute to the men
who died. The ride is beautiful and serene,
and the crash site is easy to find thanks to
signs pointing the way. Visitors are asked
to treat the area respectfully and leave
it intact. For more information, contact
Destination Moosehead Lake or visit
mooseheadlake.org.
Ride Safe
Here are a few guidelines to follow
that can help make snowmobiling
safe for everyone on the trails:
RIDE TO THE RIGHT
This is required by law. Snowmobilers must
ride to the right of center on the trail.
RIDE SOBER
Don’t drink and ride.
RIDE AT A REASONABLE SPEED
If you can’t control your sled safely at the
speed and in the conditions that you are
traveling, then you’re speeding. Slow down.
USE HAND SIGNALS
If you do not know these simple hand
signals, visit mesnow.com and learn
them before heading out on the trails.
RIDE DEFENSIVELY
Always expect the unexpected from
the sledder coming toward you. And
keep an eye out for wildlife.
