DAY 1 Fly or drive into Bangor and check in to one of many comfortable
and affordable hotels or motels close to downtown. Stretch your legs
with a Bangor Historical Society walking tour through downtown Bangor
or Mount Hope Cemetery, then grab dinner at one of the many local
restaurants downtown before you catch an evening performance at
the Bangor Opera House, Cross Insurance Center, Darling's Waterfront
Pavilion, or the Collins Center for the Arts in nearby Orono.

DAY 2 Over breakfast, plan your day's drive. Head west toward
Greenville and Moosehead Lake for a foliage cruse on the historic
steamship Katahdin, docked right in downtown at the Moosehead
Marine Museum. Or go north to the Katahdin Woods & Waters Scenic
Byway for amazing views of Mount Katahdin, especially on Ash
Hill. Stop along the way in Brownville Junction to inspect the old
blast furnace and kiln at the remains of Katahdin Iron Works.

DAY 3 Start your day at the University of Maine Museum of Art,
which shows modern and contemporary works by artists from
Maine and away. Or step into the past at the Maine Forest & Logging
Museum's Living History Days, when reenactors demonstrate steam
powered vehicles, sawmills, and old-fashioned cider presses.
An afternoon on the Growler Bus is a great way to sample the Bangor
area’s many breweries and learn about the art of crafting beer.
Follow your brewery tour with a walk in the Bangor City
Forest and Orono Bog Boardwalk, where you’ll feel relaxed
and a million miles away from the bustle of the city as you
observe migratory birds and delicate bog plants.
THE STEAMBOAT KATAHDIN ("Kate" as the locals
know her) is on the National Register of Historic Places
and is the only remaining steamship on Moosehead
Lake, where once these vessels were the only mode
of transport to remote camps and resorts. Three-hour
sightseeing cruises depart at 12:30 most days.
