Ask The Super Fans
Hi everyone! We hope you’re enjoying the August
issue of The Main Street Monthly and having a great
summer. Now, let’s answer your questions!
Question:
Hi Janet and Cindy. As seasoned Disney and Florida
veterans, what advice could you give to us who are used
to cooler weather on how to deal with the Florida heat,
especially if we are visiting parks during the summer.
Some people like to go to the parks in the morning or
evening and spend afternoons swimming at the resort,
but when we only have a few days, I want to spend
as much time as possible in the parks. Thanks! Sherry

Answer:
First of all, and most importantly, make sure you stay hydrated. Drink lots of fluids. Water or Powerade are best.
You can get FREE ice water at any restaurant that serves fountain drinks.
Second, dress in light weight and light colored clothing. Black, or dark colors, attract the sun, whereas, white, or
light colors, reflect it.
Third, the misting fans sold in the parks are wonderful for helping keep you cool. You can also find these at your
local stores that sell summer fun supplies. Hint: Fill them with ICE water. Finally, take breaks from the heat by
enjoying the indoor shows or grab a snack and an ice cold beverage inside one of the many restaurants. Both are
air conditioned!!
Question:
Hi again! I have another question. It’s kind of gross but..... Most people are not used to walking around allllllll day
like we do when visiting the parks. Blisters are a real problem. No matter what type of shoe (I have had the best
luck with New Balance walking sneakers) I always get blisters. Is there better footwear than others? Thanks again!
Sherry DeHart
Answer:
If wearing sneakers, make sure you wear socks. NOT wearing cotton socks is key! Cotton holds the moisture
which, combined with friction, causes blisters. You can find non-cotton socks at sporting goods stores or running/
walking specialty shops. Also, make sure you have plenty of room in your shoes. The heat will cause you to retain
water and your hands and feet will swell. You may need to loosen your laces throughout the day. Sneakers are my
choice of shoes for Disney.
Now, Cindy prefers flip flops. Her advice, from experience, is if you are going to wear sandals or flip flops, it is wise
to have worn them BEFORE your visit to WDW or DL. This holds true for ANY shoes, actually. Although most
sandals and flip flops are basically constructed the same, they may wear differently on your feet.
If your feet should get wet from rain, or a great ride on Kali River Rapids, grab some napkins and dry them off,
along with your flip flops or sandals. The extra moisture can contribute to blisters.
