Space telescopes are often classed as either a survey mission or as an observatory. Survey missions map the entire sky, while observatories observe certain sections of the cosmos.

Orbital space telescopes are vital for studying portions of the electromagnetic spectrum that do not penetrate Earth's atmosphere, such as gamma-rays, x-rays, and much of the infrared spectrum. (Figure 5)
