Willie was hobbling and in obvious pain, clearly unable to cope with any dealings with the public which was where his income came from. I happened to live at a very old well hidden homestead on the other side of Moree, with grassy holding paddocks, I the only occupant and enjoying a happy arrangement with the absent owners if I did them one of my portraits of the old homestead, in return I was allowed to live there rent free as long as I liked. Just pay electricity, and anything I wanted fixed I could do it myself – always at no cost to them.
