A Poem about Discrimination

Yazmin Rivera

500 gallons of water

with more salt than the sea.

The murky water is where the Bull Shark live.

One small fish can only hide for so long.

The Bull Shark sees the long, pretty fin

that sways with the motion of the water.

Sometimes they choose to skim their teeth

on the back of her light, tan scales,

but that’s only on a good day.

Most times, the Bull Shark bites her fins,

and she drags her in circles.

She swims as fast as she can,

but she is but a small fish,

The Bull Shark hits her in a twist.

So right, she cries thinking, this is the end.

But it was only a warning:

You are not the Bull Shark from the murky waters.

Your fins are too long and your scales are much too light.
