Pride and Privilege

Kirstin Butler

I’m Black and I'm proud.

Filled with pride.

Enough pride to fuel a nation to protest for what is right.

Filled with pride,

even though my ancestors were forced to come here,

to this nation,

a place where you can have a ‘better life’.

African Americans get treated wrongfully.

Even when you have parents who worked hard

to provide a better future for their children

and to make sure that those children

won't go down the path of crime.

Isn't that what's America supposed to be for?

You would think,

and yet,

we have arrogant, uneducated, White people

who will call the cops

on a Black person

and it might lead to our death.

I have to find the path that will lead me to the light.

I have to put up a fight,

because we need to feel safe in out own nation.

We need to be equal.

I'm Black and I’m proud.
