Loss Villanelle

Nicole Dipre

Above your name I see the cross.

I put down the roses and letters I had.

Soon, too soon, arrived your last breath.

I had so many mixed emotions, but not one was glad.

Who knew the summer could be so sad?

On your porch, tear-stained letters lie across.

I had so many mixed emotion; I was mad.

So many good memories, but no more to add.

So soon, too soon, arrived your last breath.

I look back to the memories we had;

I still can’t believe there are no more to add.

I cry at, yell at, and question this cross.

So many good memories; I look back and I'm glad.

Everything happens for a reason, I add.

There is reason in good and bad and in life and death.

But knowing this doesn’t stop me from being sad.

My heart is still broken, but maybe that isn’t so bad.

One of the greatest life lessons is that of loss;

it teaches all to never take for granted their last breath.
