When He Broke My Heart

Angie Velasquez

He forgot my birthday...

And my phone number.

He said, “I will not let you go,”

And then said, “Goodbye”

In the blink of an eye.

The red color of a tomato

Reminds me of his eyes.

Reminds me of his debilitating illness,

And makes me feel angry

That in Peru I left him alone.

The honking sound of a car's horn,

My mom’s voice on the phone,

People running with their dogs on the street,

All remind me of him.

A pitiful soul,

I start to cry.

Flashbacks of the tumultuous relationship,

And the moment you ended our love.

I really want to see you, but I can’t.

I am very scared

That you will hurt me again.

You,

Dad,

I won’t forget at all,

Because I cannot;

You broke my heart.
