Moving for the Sake of Education
Maria Alejandra Hilario
“The more that you read, the more you will know;
The more you know, the more places you'll go.”
That means a good education
Can get you what you deserve.
But moving to another country was a struggle.
Uprooting my family
From a serene environment
To an unknown place.
School in America: confusing and terrifying.
Speaking English in front of other people...
I felt like a cat in a strange neighborhood.
The classrooms so different;
Would the teaching be different, too?
I felt so lost,
Like an ant in a maze.
But I was treated well.
I didn’t have any bad moments in an American classroom
Surrounded by English speakers.
I could hear people speaking Spanish.
I had Spanish-speaking friends close to me.
I could feel the warmth.
A different language, a different culture
And a totally different way of life changed my perspective:
A new country,
A safe way of life
And a great education.
“Education is the passport to the future,
For tomorrow belongs to those
Who prepare for it today.”
