SHOWREVIEW
Lock collectors
modernise website
»»THE LOCK COLLECTORS
Association fascinated visitors
to Lockex with a display of
antique locks and keys.
Association president David
Key and his colleagues showed
the collections and also brought
relevant books to the trade show
at Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
Tony Beck, secretary of the
group, said it was currently
modernising its website to create
a ‘better informative appearance.’
He said: “On the Saturday at
Lockex we enjoyed a great day
and received a steady number of
visitors, asking questions, looking
at our displays and showing the
nice amount of interest we have
come to expect at these lock shows
- which we greatly appreciate.
“We obtained some interest to
join our association. People do
sometimes come along at an early
age and they are just the type we
want really to increase the number
of our young members. Of course
we very much welcome older
experienced locksmiths too.”
The Lock Collectors
Association was formed in
the early 1970s by a group of
likeminded collectors of antique
locks. From those early meetings
at John Holden’s locksmiths shop
in Altrincham, the association
developed with more members
joining. Activities included
attendances at the European
Lock Collectors annual events in
Germany, France and Austria.
Some years ago the group
hosted an event for the
Europeans in London, which
included visits to the V&A and
Science Museums. Regular other
meetings in the UK continue to
be arranged and the association
also attends the lock trade’s
annual shows.
Earlier this year, the group
visited Assa Abloy, Willenhall.
Tony said: “It was an interesting
and memorable event, with the
company’s executive directors
attending over lunch in the
boardroom.”
The association sends out a
Lock Collector newsletter - with
about 20 colour illustrated
pages - but its main activity is
preserving its collection of old
locks and keys. Tony added:
“Our members write books
and articles themselves, all of
which we believe leads to our
preserving the lock industry’s
history and heritage. We are not
confined only to trade members.
All we require is an interest in
our activities.”
The association accepts
applications for membership (£25
per year subscription). This can
be paid via Paypal (tonybeck@
sky.com) or cheque to the Lock
Collectors Association – post to
Tony Beck, 19 Lawrence Avenue,
Chaddesden, Derby, DE21
