Fire Protection Roundtable event hosted by ASFP supports Fire Door Safety Week

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection ( ASFP ) hosted a Fire Protection Roundtable on the 28 September in support of Fire Door Safety Week .
»»
THE EVENT , BROUGHT TOGETHER A panel of key experts from across the entire construction process to develop solutions to key issues affecting fire safety in the built environment and to offer best practice advice to all involved in the construction process .
The Roundtable session , held at the offices of UBM EMEA in London , also saw an interactive question time event which the ASFP held on 22 June during UBM ’ s Firex International exhibition . The Question of Safety session , chaired by ASFP CEO Wilf Butcher , allowed visitors to pose questions to a panel of specialists ; each representing a different industry discipline .
Panellists ranged from an architect through to the building owner including ; a criminal regulatory lawyer , a fire engineer , a Tier 1 contractor and specialist subcontractor , as well as passive fire protection manufacturers , an insurer , and representatives from building control , the fire service and a test house / certification body .
The wide ranging discussions that ensued highlighted a number of key issues affecting fire safety in the built environment , which will now be taken forward for further discussion by the panellists . These include :
• fragmentation within the construction design and build process ;
• the need to ensure adequate understanding and training for specifiers ;
• improving standards of fire protection installation ;
• ensuring competency in fire risk assessment ; and
• improving building resilience .
With fragmentation within the construction industry a key concern , often leading to the incorrect specification and installation of fire protection materials and systems , finding a means of improving interaction between all construction industry disciplines will be a significant focus for the Roundtable discussions .
The aim will be to develop structures , processes and best practice guidance to enable the development of multidisciplinary teams which will offer earlier engagement of fire safety professionals in the construction , design and build process and better communication across the industry .

‘ Burglar Bill ’ goes undetected in 90 % of England and Wales home invasions

»»
SURVEY RESULTS SHOW that only 16 % of Brits think to burglar proof their front door first to prevent burglary attempts , despite data from England and Wales police showing that 90 % of attempts are successful .
During the period June 2015-May 2016 , there were 397,643 recorded burglaries by England & Wales Police forces according to data from the UK police ’ s official website . In 277,300 cases the investigations have been completed and no suspect was identified . 79,625 cases are still under investigation , meaning a staggering 90 % of recorded burglary attempts during this 12-month period , were successful .
With these statistics in mind , Truedor surveyed 2,000 people in the United Kingdom to ask them ; ‘ What do you think is the best deterrent to stop burglaries on your property ?’
23 % of those questions came back with Burglar Alarm , followed by CCTV with 20 %.
Despite the data from the UK police showing that nine in 10 burglary attempts are successful only 16 % of those surveyed believed that a Secure Door was the number one deterrent for a burglar .
Quote from Clive Stewart , Chairman of the Essex County Neighbourhood Watch Association :
( Bar chart showing breakdown on Truedor ’ s survey results )
“ There are many households that do not take specific care to lock their PVCu doors sufficiently despite having reminders from the Police .
The Police can only keep up the practice of sending out messages to remind people to protect their own property and also help those who may feel vulnerable . Then it is up to everyone to try their very best .
It really is up to each person to take this advice and try their best to reduce the opportunity of crime .”
Truedor offer Truly Secure composite doors , fitted with high security multipoint locking systems as standard .
