INDUSTRYNEWS AUTUMN CAMPAIGNS GET UNDER WAY Statistics show there’s a 20 percent increase in home burglaries during the darker months, and the average cost of a winter burglary weighs in at a hefty £1,746. With this in mind, 1 October marked the start of National Home Security Month (NHSM). Supported by Yale, it runs throughout the month and is designed to create awareness around the importance of home security. The rising importance of CCTV and computer technology as part of both commercial and domestic security protection is well-illustrated by Yale’s latest launch, the Easy Fit 960H weatherresistant CCTV systems, which can be used indoors and out. The DVR and cameras can be linked up to a TV or monitor via HDMI, VGA or RCA connections and can also be linked to a router, enabling remote viewing from any location as long as the device is connected to the internet. Images can be viewed on Smartphones or tablets using the Yale Viewing App, available from the Google or Apple store, or using a PC internet explorer web browser. Another October safety campaign has the backing of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA). Campaigners from the DHF Powered Gate Group have declared a week of action in October in a bid to improve dramatically the safety of automated gates in the UK. Other influential groups are lending their support to Gate Safety Week (13-19 October www.gatesafetyweek.org.uk ). The DHF Powered Gate Group was set up with the encouragement of the HSE following fatal accidents involving unsafe gates. In recent years, three children and three adults have been killed in gate accidents. In his latest industry blog (see page 66) Dean Sanderson of the 3D Group expresses concern about the availability of auto locksmith information and tools to anyone– including the criminally-minded individuals and businesses without any scruples.
