56 • HARDWARE&SECURITY PROUD SPONSORS OF THIS PAGE Gaping home security hole revealed »»Research undertaken by Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) has highlighted a gaping home security hole amongst its members. Working alongside its primary security sponsor, Avocet Hardware, NHWN’s research found that two thirds of the 6,000 respondents do not change their locks when they move home. And of those two thirds, 86.2 per cent don’t even consider it. Jim Maddan, chairman of NHWN, said: “These figures alone may not seem that surprising, but when you consider that around 11% of the population moves home in the UK every year, then it begs the question just how many people could have a key to your new front door?” “And when you take into account the most recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) crime survey showed that 92% of all domestic burglary in a dwelling in England and Wales was committed through either the front or back door.” Clive Lloyd, managing director of Avocet Hardware, said: “Whether it’s friends or neighbours we’ve given spare keys to while we’re away on holiday; workmen we’ve left a key out for; or even our grown-up children who still have their own sets of keys; there’s no escaping the fact a lot of people could still have a key.” Close to 40% told NHWN that they do change their locks when they move, while a further 25% made the decision based on the fact they felt the locks looked inadequate. Meanwhile, only 6.9% of people changed locks in order to upgrade to antisnap locks – an extraordinarily low figure when you consider that over half of those polled had PVCu doors. “Our advice is simple – change your locks as soon as you move and rule out at least one horribly easy route into your home.” Clive adds. www.ourwatch.org.uk. www.abs-secure.co.uk. POLICE APPROVE SECURIKEY MIRRORS AND SAFES »»UK physical security supplier Securikey has gained ‘Police Preferred Specification’ status for nine models in its convex safety mirror range. Working with Bennett Mirror, a leading mirror specialist with over 60 years’ of mirroring expertise Technologies, Securikey has developed the Institutional Polycarbonate, Institutional Stainless Steel and Anti-Vandalism safety mirror ranges. The mirrors have also been developed in conjunction with prison architects and been rigorously tested to meet stringent UK Home Office, London Metropolitan Police and Prison Service regulations. Securikey’s approved models come in various styles and are all ligaturefree. Their anti-vandalism properties withstand harsh environments in prisons, psychiatric hospitals and secure correction facilities. Securikey’s Institution Polycarbonate range includes quarter and half face models, both with a hardwearing mirror face of 3mm polycarbonate. The range has a flexible protective coating to resist repeated blows and a strong powder-coated steel frame to securely fasten the mirrors, preventing removal and tampering. The Institutional Stainless Steel range has quarter dome, half dome, and ceiling dome options. Made from high quality scratch resistant 1.2mm stainless steel for clear reflection, these mirrors are unbreakable, heat resistant and easy to maintain with anti-ligature steel frames. Innovative pressed counterstep holes in the ceiling dome mean this model can be fixed to the ceiling or wall without the need for a frame, and an anti-pik filler further minimises ligature risk. The Anti-Vandalism Stainless Steel range offers a stainless steel wall dome mirror with 180 degrees of vision. This range is for highly hostile environments and helps prevent surprise attacks. It is ideal for vandalism-prone areas as graffiti can be removed with solvents without damage to the mirror. www.securikey.co.uk 01252 311888 [email protected] locksmithjournal.co.uk | NOV/DEC 2015 Sponsored by ABUS
