Although former soldier Paul, who rides to the rescue of his locksmith clients on a £10,000 BMW GT maxi scooter called Excalibur, didn’t win, he admitted that he was thrilled to be among the finalists, which were all very large companies. “I was the only small business, up against these mega giants, so that was quite something,” he said. “At the awards ceremony, there were all these huge companies such as the City College and Santander – and then just me!” Originally from Northern Ireland, Paul started his locksmith business over four years ago and called it Sir Fixa-lock after Arthurian legend Sir Lancelot. The business awards were hosted by Phil Vickery of England Rugby and British Lions fame. Paul was nominated for the award on several counts, mostly on the back of his extensive charity work and commitment to recycling all his metals – also in aid of charity; and his support for vulnerable people in the area. His business has taken on some of the client list of another Plymouth firm: Bel-Cher Locksmith and Safe Engineer, following the retirement of owner Chris Belcher, one of the best known personalities in the sector. Paul continues his charity work, mainly for Jeremiah’s Journey, a local charity which looks after children who have just lost a parent or someone very close and look after children who have someone they know with terminal illness. Two years ago, Paul beat locksmiths from across Britain and Ireland to become the fastest to crack a jammed door lock in a challenge run by the firm Ultimate Tools at the national MLA EXPO in Telford. It is more than likely that he will be back this October!
