TS 007 - The lock standard embraced by locksmiths and the security industry alike by Michael Skelding , general manager and secretary of the Door and Hardware Federation

»»
THE DHF REPRESENTS the UK ’ s leading manufacturers of locks and door hardware . This is the latest in a series of articles in The Locksmith informing locksmiths and security professionals about the latest developments within the industry …
TS 007 was developed by the industry in response to the increasing incidence of lock cylinder snapping . Previously only known to locksmiths and “ professional ” burglars , cylinder snapping techniques became widely known thanks to the ready availability of manuals and videos demonstrating lock snapping available online .
There are two reasons for the huge popularity of TS 007 . Firstly , locksmiths have the confidence that it offers real security , and therefore peace of mind , for their customers . Security to the TS 007 standard can be achieved by either a combination of a TS 007 cylinder ( marked with one star ) and TS 007 security door furniture such as a strengthened door handle ( marked with two stars ); or a cylinder ( marked with three stars ) that does not need additional door hardware . In both cases , the same degree of resistance against attack is provided .
Secondly , TS 007 enjoys universal acceptance and recognition in the market place and products meeting that standard can be third party certified by UKAS accredited certification bodies such as BSI ( British

Standards Institution ) and Exova Warrington It has gained a high degree of trust in the public perception . To householders and premises managers alike , the BSI Kitemark™ has been the accepted security mark for locks for decades .
Locksmiths recognise the importance of third party certification . It gives the reassurance that the product has achieved consistency and reliability of compliance with the standard . Third party certification is a guarantee to the end user / customer that a product has been independently tested by an approved authority other than the manufacturer and installer and then certified . BSI awards the Kitemark to certify that it has seen test reports and has satisfied themselves that the product has been independently and rigorously tested . In addition , BSI audits the lock makers ’ manufacturing facilities and their quality management systems . BSI also insists on regular retesting of the product .
BSI Kitemark products like TS 007 cylinders are regularly retested to ensure on-going production meets both the needs of customers and the latest version of the specification . The fenestration lab at BSI ’ s Centre of Excellence in Hemel Hempstead carries out specific tests that mimic a forced break-in on all types of doors . These tests include mechanical loading impact testing and the testing of locks , hinges and cylinders .
There are other benefits to the locksmith that result from choosing Kitemark TS 007 cylinders to replace
Eurocylinders . Because the TS 007 three star security rating can be achieved by a combination of cylinder and door handle , as an alternative to cylinder replacement alone , the locksmith has greater flexibility in meeting the needs of his customer .
And something to tell the customer ... There is growing evidence that insurance companies are expecting to see the Kitemark on TS
007 cylinders and door handles for PVCu and composite entrance doors . An influential insurance organisation has published a guidance document for householders on security . The guide states : “ The easiest way to identify TS 007 rated cylinders / door furniture is to look for the BSI Kitemark plus star rating on products / packaging .” The insurance organisation concerned , RISCAuthority , is supported by a significant group of UK insurers and carries out research in support of the development and dissemination of best practice on the protection of property and business .
An indication of the success of the standard is that there are more than 160 TS 007 products that have now been certified by BSI and carry the Kitemark .
So all things considered , locksmiths who provide TS 007 products to their customers are making a wise business decision indeed .
