Locks Ltd is a domestic
and commercial locksmith,
operating in and around
Newhaven, East Sussex, for
more than 32 years, also
offering safes, shoe repairs,
engraving, UPVC locks and
architectural ironmongery.
But over the past four years,
resident locksmiths Matt
Nemeth and Tom Shelley have
turned their entrepreneurial
flare towards more charitable
causes, generating substantial
donations for local charities
from the scrap metal
accumulated from their
work.
The idea came to Matt
while working as a plumber,
when he would weigh in
scrap copper and donate the
money to a local hospice.
As a locksmith, Matt began
collecting waste non-
ferrous metal and gradually
donations began to flood
in from a couple of local
churches, the local council
housing maintenance
department, estate and
letting agents and a few local
handy men.
When Matt was
approached by a locksport
enthusiast looking for
old cylinders to pick, he
saw an opportunity to
maximise what money he
could generate from his
scrap for the charities and
began selling snapped
cylinders on eBay, more
than quadrupling what he
would get at standard scrap
value. Enlisting the help of
his 12-year-old daughter to
package and post the orders,
Matt is now well on his way
to raising a four-figures sum
for the charities he supports,
which this year is the local
cubs and scout groups, to
help the kids to get outside
and have fun rather than
sitting at home on their
iPads.
“We’ve had a great
response on eBay, shipping
orders all over the world
to places like Norway and
Texas and even as far as New
Zealand. We welcome any
local donations and I hope
that this might inspire others
to use what is essentially
free spoils of the trade to
put something back into the
community,” Matt says.
