There are numerous examples of how this industry is succeeding in this but so often, it is left to the massive corporations which have the resources behind them. So for a small company to come up with a brand new product from the germ of an idea requires inspiration and a clear vision as well as nerves of steel – and a commitment to the time and money needed for research and development. Peter Corlett, MD of Lincolnbased Dynamic Access Solutions, ticks all those boxes and is now set to fulfil his vision to transform the locking industry by offering the remarkable eLOQ, which he describes as “traditional robust technology enhanced by digital intelligence.” Peter explained the inspiration behind eLOQ: “Key control is often a problem for many businesses and all too often, a compromise is made – which is obviously never ideal with security issues. If a key becomes lost, the security level either plummets or a costly re-key exercise is required. With mechanical key systems there is no accountability as there are no audit trails of the key use and no the ability to restrict users to areas based on time and date ranges. “eLOQ is designed to eliminate the issues of keys being copied or lost, as our keys are electronic, they can be easily administered using the latest computer technology and provide users a whole range of other features.” But Peter admits that taking the product from the idea stage to prototype to actual launch, would not have been possible without the invaluable help and support of the University of Lincoln School of Computer Science as well as government funding via the Knowledge Transfer Partnership. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme (KTP) aims to help businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK Knowledge Base. KTP is funded by Innovate UK along with other government funding organisations. ‘There is no power in the locks, no battery, no wiring - and so it is totally different and offers great flexibility across many markets’ locksmithjournal.co.uk | MAR/APR 2015 “It was a real collaboration,” explained Peter, who studied Marketing at the University. “We had spotted a game-changing opportunity and knew what was needed but there was no way we could have done it on our own. Our aim was to make a brand new product that was very different from any that existed. There is no power in the locks, no battery, no wiring – and so it is totally different and offers great flexibility across many markets. We identified from the ground up that it also needed to be user-friendly and affordable to bring it within reach of the widest possible market, and also offer users flexibility and accountability. eLOQ has a development road-map and will include the ability to re-program keys in real-time using Smart Phones. With this in mind, they set up a new company, Dynamic Access Solutions to focus on the new product, with Peter as MD. “Technology eventually influences everything and this industry is now welcoming innovation to work alongside the traditional elements. It’s important that security products have the right appeal to new generations of people to whom technology is a way of life.” Developing the an easy to use yet secure software platform that was clearly crucial to the process so they brought in talented software engineer, Nanda Laskshimarayanan who has been welcomed on board as part of the permanent development team.
