Jeff is this month’s winner Congratulations to the lucky winner of this issue’s Locksmith Lottery – who is Jeff Seymour of Seymour Locksmiths, based in Shoreham by Sea close to Brighton. » » JEFF HAILED FROM YORKSHIRE originally (all the best people do!) then moved to Lincolnshire, later heading south as far as one can get - to England’s south coast where he lives ‘twixt the river and the sea, on a Victorian schooner which he actually salvaged from the river where she had lain unloved for many years. “It was a labour of love to get her out and I have been restoring her ever since,” he said, “but I enjoy every minute. So far it has taken me a year and a half to get her into this condition but there is work still to be done. I love working with wood so it is no hardship.” Built as a three masted schooner in 1876, the 79ft long “Asteroid” was commissioned originally by a high- ranking military gentleman. “She was beautifully built in the traditional style just before the advent of steam engines – though she later did have a steam engine,” Jeff explained. “I am also lucky enough to have a freehold mooring here – one of the only areas in the UK to have these.” Like many locksmiths today, Jeff – a former transport manager for a haulage company – retrained getting on for three years ago and went into the business because he wanted to work on his own for himself and he enjoys doing a job with a lot of variety where every day can be different. He also says he enjoys the traditional skills involved in working with locks and keys. “I am very lucky to enjoy both my business, Seymour Locksmiths, which is doing really well, and my passion for my boat – and also to live in this friendly LOCKSMITHJOURNAL.CO.UK | JUL/AUG 2017 Sponsored by SMP Security Solutions community in an area renowned for individuality and creativity.” Jeff says he was delighted to win his prize of a free tool bag containing a pick set, key extraction set, super mica, local identification manual and padlock shims, worth more than £200 from Napit. He also gets a bottle of Champagne from The Locksmith journal but he won’t be saving it for the launch of “Asteroid”! “She isn’t ever going to sea,” he smiled, “but she’s a great place to live and suits me to a T.” www.seymour-locksmiths.co.uk
