David Herbert, Head of Marketing for Yale, looks at how locksmiths can make the most of opportunities and open the door to more business. Lock snapping was first reported in West Yorkshire and remains prevalent in this region but, thanks to cylinder developments from security manufacturers, the rate of burglaries lock snapping accounts for in this area has fallen from 40% to 25%. It has, however, has now become more widespread across the country, making it more important than ever for consumers to be vigilant when it comes to home security. With the locks most at risk of lock snapping being those fitted with a Euro profile cylinder, millions of homes across the UK are potentially affected by this issue, so what can be done to help tackle it? ‘millions of homes across the UK are potentially affected by this issue’ Media coverage is helping to raise awareness, with recent footage shown on the BBC’s ‘Watchdog Test House’ demonstrating just how vulnerable Euro profile cylinders are. The clip showed how this method of burglary could be used to gain entry to a property in as little as 15 seconds using just brute force, with no key and no specialist tools. 52 THE JUL/AUG 2014 ISSUE SPONSORED BY TRADELOCKS The security industry has already taken significant steps to address the issue, working to develop products to counteract such attack methods. Commitment to ongoing research and development by security product manufacturers is vital in helping to stay one step ahead of the criminals, and we have a duty to invest in innovation to bring new and more advanced products to the market to keep the UK’s homes protected against the risk of crime. Developed in conjunction with the Door and Hardware Federation, the TS007 standard is designed to combat lock snapping and offers comparable levels of cylinder security to those already found in complete door assemblies rated to PAS 24 and complete lock assemblies rated to BS and PAS 3621/10621. Under the TS007 three star system the cylinder, or a combination of the cylinder and security furniture, must have an accumulative three stars to meet the minimum security requirements. Yale’s Kitemarked AS Platinum is TS007:2012 3 Star accredited, tested to the British Standard BS EN1303:2005 and approved by Secured by Design, the official UK Police initiative that supports the principles of ‘designing out crime’ . In order to successfully receive TS007 accreditation, products must undergo extreme testing. For example, the AS Platinum was subject to rigorous internal testing by Yale and was also tested by an independent professional body. As part of this testing, the cylinders are subjected to a two and a half minute attack by a test engineer using a standard tool. The engineer is allowed to try virtually any technique he chooses to try and brea
