And then, ten years ago, in 2009, ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson dies, Barack Obama becomes 44th President of the USA (does anyone remember who replaced him?), everyone gets pig sick of Swine Flu, and most significant of all – The Locksmith Journal is born. That’s right, this issue is our 10th anniversary special. And, while the ‘ancient craft’ of locksmithing has very much stood the test of time, I bet you will have noticed some major changes in the security sector over the past decade. As I’ve just passed the 12-month mark of working at The Locksmith Journal myself, I took to the archives recently to see what a magazine from three years, five years, or ten years ago looked like – some of the covers and articles that stood out to me (for different reasons) are on the next page and a half… One of the most significant changes – and not just in security – has been the rise of smartware. Still, not everyone sees it as a smart direction to move in, but it’s happening whether we like it or not. And, while I don’t think I’ll ever know why a fridge needs to be connected to a mobile phone; when it comes to home and business security, I do understand the merits of a fully-integrated system all in the palm of my hand. I’m sure I’ll still be rummaging around my bag for my door keys though to make sure I have them. In terms of 2019, Digital Security and the protection of personal and professional data has also started to creep onto our pages. It makes sense, given that books and files – that would once be kept behind lock and key – now require a virtual vault to keep prying eyes away from them, and ‘pa55word’ is simply not enough, I’m afraid. From all at The Locksmith Journal, we thank you for the past 10 years of support, and here’s to the next 10… I wonder what we will be reading about in 2029 and will it still be on printed paper or will we be beaming a holographic version to you instead? Better keep your addresses on file, just in case. Gemma, Editor LOCKSMITHJOURNAL.CO.UK | JAN/FEB 2019 Ten years in the life of... Using our own ‘Day in the life of a locksmith’ model, the team has picked our highlights of the magazine, since day one – hasn’t a lot happened? 2009 -10 In its inaugural year, The Locksmith Journal set out to inform, educate, and entertain locksmiths, auto locksmiths and security specialists. ‘How to’ articles were common place (we’d still like to see more of these please!), and barely a mention of a smart lock could be found.
