A look at the new HD72
Lockcase from UNION
» » UNION, HAS ANNOUNCED THE
launch of its new HD72 modular euro-
profile 72mm lockcases, which the
company claims delivers an unrivalled
level of performance while meeting
current security standards around fire
and equality of access.
The new lockcase has been designed
to cover a wide range of typical needs
in specifications and is available in six
variants; sashlock, deadlock, mortice
latch, deadlocking nightlatch, bathroom
lock and an emergency escape lock.
The HD72 range can also be specified
with either a square or radius forend,
and all come in a wide choice of finishes,
pitching them as a high quality lock
solution for door manufacturers.
The lockcases have been subject
to intensive testing to ensure they
can deliver a high level of durability.
Headlining this is a test result of over 3.5
million cycles, an impressive figure far
in excess of the demands laid down by
BS EN 12209 and appreciably above the
performance of competing products.
“We’ve gone to a lot of trouble with
the HD72 to produce a lockcase that
answers common issues specifiers and
installers face,” says Karen Hubbard,
Product Manager for Mortice Locks at
UNION. “To reach 3.5 million test cycles
says a lot about how durable the new
lockcase is, but there’s the also the
details we’ve built in to HD72 to make
it really convenient to both specify and
install.”
Beyond the numbers the new lockcase
contains a number of features that
will appeal to specifiers and installers
alike. First, HD72 incorporates heavy
duty springing to support handles up to
930g in weight and a follower set at one
degree away from vertical. Combined,
these allow specifiers the freedom to be
more design-lead in projects, while also
combatting against drooping levers – the
bane of many projects particularly with
doors in medium – heavy usage areas. As
the HD72 range meets Grade 3 category
of use the new lockcase makes a strong
case for use in areas where it could be
subjected to heavy use or even abuse.
The lockcases are a universal f it for
both door hands via a simple way to
rotate the latch without resorting to
hunting for tools; just move a release pin
located in the lockcase up and pull the
latch out, then turn it round. For anyone
wanting to get away from the time (and
risks) involved in dismantling lockcases
to do the same thing will find just feature
alone a boon but it bring other benefits
too. There’s no need for a specifier to
analyse and check each door in a project
to accurately state what product variant
is needed where, while an Architectural

Ironmonger can better manage stock –
and an installer will find locating the right
lockcase for a job quick and easy.
Being able to secure a door, or open
it to escape, quickly by anyone has
become increasingly important when
looking at lockcases. The HD72 range
has been designed with a single-throw,
20mm deadbolt that is easy to use – so
a user should not be confused with
double turns on to lock and unlock, or
wondering if the door has been properly
secured.
On the subject of speed and efficiency,
another useful feature of the HD72 is the
adjustable strike plate, which allows the
installer to make a door seal effectively in
the doorframe and, therefore, potentially
eliminate irritating rattles. This helps
make the installation have a professional
appearance and a quality feel in use –
and as the lockcases are CE marked and
certified for use in timber and metal fire
doors, this helps an installer or property
owner alike ensure a door will pass a fire
inspection.
The new HD72 lockcase range is an
ideal choice for doors in first-fit and
retro-fit projects, and with a 15-year
guarantee, is a durable, heavy duty
solution that will stand the test of time.
