Are you properly insured for all the work you do?
A recent survey of 100 nonmembers by the Institute
of Certified Locksmiths
(ICL/ICAL) uncovered
some disturbing facts – it
appears that many are
trading without the correct
insurance to cover them to
work on cars.
The results surprised ICAL/
ICL: only 12% of those
surveyed had liability cover,
professional indemnity cover
in place to cover them while
working on customers’ cars.
Most were trading with only
general locksmith insurance,
which is not adequate and
simply does not cover them
either to open cars or to
program new keys to cars.
Most worrying of all,
2% of those surveyed had
absolutely no cover at all.
Customers need to be sure
that the auto locksmiths
they use do have the correct
insurance cover for all the
services they provide.
If this not the case, it might
prove costly for the customer
in the event of loss or damage
to the vehicle following a
job done by a no- properly
insured auto locksmith,
leaving the customer with no
recourse and possibly footing
a big bill themselves. The
reputation of the locksmith
and his business – and hence
his livelihood - could be at
risk.
In an ideal world, an auto
locksmith would not dream
of trading or offering a
service to the public without
having the correct adequate
insurance in place, but sadly,
this is not an ideal world,
so ICAL/ICL strongly urges
customers to ensure that
any auto locksmith they
employ or contract with,
has correct and sufficient
liability insurances that cover
relevant work on motor
vehicles.
Any auto locksmith
currently offering such
services who is not properly
insured to carry out this
work, should cease doing so
until insured properly.
This insurance is available
from a number of brokers
and providers. ICL and ICAL
recommend and advise
Locksure insurance to its
members.

offering auto locksmith
services and carrying out any
work at all on motor vehicles
, is properly and adequately
insured so to do.
