UNIVERSITY : IS IT A WASTE OF TIME ?

Does the education system really prepare young people for the financial world , or is the jump between education and work really too wide of a gap ?

Belief requires action !

On a daily basis , a new statement is released providing the latest statistics on the current state of unemployment in the UK . This is often specifically targeted on graduate and youth unemployment , with the concerning question being raised : is the country ’ s university system failing students ? What added value does a degree bring ? Is university a waste of time ?

Graduating from university is , in fact , an impressive accomplishment ; I mean , you face deadlines , social problems , debt , and homesickness . After a few years , you finally achieve what you ’ ve been fighting for : ‘ your degree ’.
But why is it that many university students get their degrees , some even do their masters , but after being in education for almost twenty-three years of their lives , they still aren ’ t able to get a job ? Is that really enough ? Are you finally ready and well equipped to venture into the world beyond books and studying ?
According to statistics , students are increasingly faced with an overwhelming struggle to find their first job . 538,000 young people aged 16 – 24 were unemployed in November 2017 . In January 2018 , it was 15,000 more than the previous quarter but 16,000 less than the year before .
A study has found that half of those who have gone to university are no better off than those who have not gone to university . In addition , 26 % of all university graduates in the UK regret the time and money they spent on a university education , equating to 5.6 million people across the country .
The question now is : “ why ?”. Why is the unemployment rate so high among graduates ? Many criticise the university education system and say that education is outdated . With university education being criticised for being outdated , it is essential that students are encouraged to get as much work experience as they can . This will , in turn , enable companies to find potential employees with the culture , attitude and core skills they require .
The reality is that we will always encounter challenges in life , whether they are related to finding a job , finishing university , or anything else . These challenges are not supposed to destroy you ; they exist so that you can find the strength within yourself and use it to break through . Bijoux Mwalimu is a perfect example of this – continue reading to find out how she overcame her struggles after university .
After losing her job , Bijoux Mwalimu struggled to get into the career she wanted . Despite experiencing this gruelling journey , she tells us what kept her going on the road to success .
iving without my father made

“ Lthings hard for my family ; my mother had two jobs to make ends meet and seeing her work so hard pushed me to do well at school so that I would never have to go through the same thing she did . I didn ’ t want to struggle ; however , after leaving university , things weren ’ t that easy .

At the time , I worked for a global pharmaceutical company , which I was really enjoying . A month-and-ahalf into the position , my permanent contract was turned to temporary because they were no longer able to keep me on . By December , I was out of a job !
This event really prompted me to put into practice all that I had learned about the power of faith , at the UCKG . I took part in their financial meetings on Mondays , determined that I would get a good job in
Canary Wharf , where I had always wanted to work .
Asking for God ’ s favour wasn ’ t enough , I made sure to do my part . I went to different interviews , but I wasn ’ t receiving any answers . I didn ’ t give up though . I remember during one particular financial meeting , saying : “ I will receive my answer this same week !” I was so sure of myself that I went to the next set of interviews full of confidence . One day that week , to my surprise , I received five calls from different companies with job offers .
I was so amazed ; I had never been in a position like that before ! The companies were throwing different figures at me fighting to have me work for them . After carefully considering my options , I decided to accept an offer with a well-known bank . They had extended my contract and increased my salary to more than what the other competitors were offering .
The great thing about it is that it is aligned with the career path I want and in the location I wanted , Canary Wharf , just like I determined ! It feels good to be working at the global headquarters - I couldn ’ t be happier ; I am really enjoying it . I know that this wouldn ’ t have been possible if I hadn ’ t put my faith into action .
People often think that just because they beg God for something , it will automatically happen . It doesn ’ t work that way . Belief requires action . The way I see it , my part is to do what I can . God ’ s part is to do what I cannot .”
