Sligo native, William Higgins, proposes an
early atomic theory. He is the fi rst to use
letters to denote elements and lines for
chemical bonds.

It is said that Waterford born Robert Boyle
was the “Father of Modern Chemistry”, he
went on to establish Boyle’s Law, a law that
relates the pressure and volume of an
ideal gas.
