White pyramidal crystals pile up at the bottom of the test tube, then darken a bit from ultraviolet light. I think of great grandfather standing by a talus pile at the dark wide-mouth entrance of a silver mine, gazing at red & purple streaked stones— his eyes carefully assaying silver. I wonder what he might have thought of if he were here in this lab working the same experiment. I imagine him absorbed in all of my chemistry, in all of Nature’s chemistry, prospecting and working silver 57
