hile the Southern ladies raised their glasses with dainty
cotton-gloved hands, sipped their mint sweet teas while
gossiping who they saw at the ball (who was waltzing with
whom), the slaves, with their finger pricked hands, loaded
the cotton in the gin dancing to the scrim and sway of
rubber belts in the feculent heat.
