An important artist who also makes a reference to the technique of weaving and
twine is Voula Masoura. She uses in her artwork, along with other fabrics and
threads, the twine as a material that she correlates with the limits, such as LightDark, Beginning -Ending, Life-Death. The bipolar relationship of these is imprinted in
our memory. The present is connected with the past and the future. She aims for the
attrition by making use of well-known memories over her artwork. The twine,
moreover, is a timeless element in the Greek tradition. She intervenes on the
projects aiming to develop levels, shapes and volumes and sets created in the
painting perception.
One reason I choose also to incorporate the twine is because I am referring to the
limit, as a line, making a similar correlation between Rationality and Madness. A
weaved surface builds relationships with space, intensifying the meaning of the
perishability and vulnerability. Shapes, lines, volumes and the resulting plasticity are
important in my work, and form an ontological approach to the surface.
Voula Masoura, ‘’No Name’’, mixed media, 160 Χ 220 cm, 1980–1990
Marela Zacarias, is a new artist, who has combined the media of sculpture and
painting. Characteristic of her artistic work is the relationship she acquires with the
space, placing the works on the wall, on the floor, on top of other objects or around
them. Her choice of material is plaster on a wire screen to adjust it and get the
desirable shape. She creates surfaces with volumes which she draws on top with
original designs and geometric abstract shapes.
The sculpture substance that she gives to a surface with volumes and shapes, are
elements that exist in my own projects as well. The relationship that our projects
share with the space, is the common component. They become the epidermis on
every position they are placed. The figures depicted in each case have a different
